Minnesota has long been home to some incredible mystery writers. While names like John Sandford and William Kent Krueger have introduced readers around the world to crime fiction set in the North Star State, they're far from the only authors crafting unforgettable mysteries.
Recently, I asked fellow readers, writers, and mystery fans to recommend Minnesota mystery authors they thought deserved more attention. The response was overwhelming. Between their suggestions, recommendations from an independent Minnesota bookstore, and a few authors I've already had the pleasure of reading, I ended up with a growing TBR pile and a list of five authors I'm excited to dive into (or revisit) this summer.
Whether you enjoy cozy mysteries, small-town whodunits, psychological suspense, or gripping crime novels, there's something here for every mystery fan.
Jess Lourey
If you enjoy mysteries with memorable characters, plenty of humor, and the charm of small-town Minnesota, it's hard to go wrong with Jess Lourey's Murder-by-Month series. Amateur sleuth Mira James finds herself investigating murders while navigating life in Battle Lake, Minnesota, creating stories that are as much about community as they are about solving crimes.
One of the things I admire most is the way Lourey makes the town itself feel like another character. Readers who love getting to know the people as much as the mystery will feel right at home.
Allen Eskens
Allen Eskens has become one of Minnesota's best-known crime writers, and for good reason. His novels combine tightly woven mysteries with deeply human characters, often exploring themes of justice, family, and redemption. I recently finished The Life We Bury, and I'll admit, I was hooked after the very first chapter.
If you're looking for suspense that keeps you turning pages while still delivering emotional depth, Eskens is an excellent place to start.
Amy Gregg
Amy Gregg brings readers into rural Minnesota with mysteries that balance intriguing puzzles and welcoming communities. Her stories capture the quieter side of Minnesota life while reminding us that even the friendliest towns can hide dangerous secrets.
Her first mystery, Farmed and Dangerous, has earned a spot on my summer TBR list, and I'm looking forward to digging into it.
David Housewright
When the conversation turns to Minnesota mystery writers, David Housewright's name comes up again and again, and for good reason. His award-winning Rushmore McKenzie series blends engaging mysteries with memorable characters and a strong sense of place, making Minnesota more than just a backdrop for the story.
Housewright's novels are driven as much by the people as the puzzle, something I always appreciate in a mystery. If you enjoy stories where the setting feels lived-in and the characters keep you coming back for the next book, his work deserves a spot on your TBR list, as it's definitely earned a place on mine.

I couldn't put together a list of Minnesota mystery authors without admitting that I'm a little biased.
My Originally Pressed Mystery Series is set in the fictional town of Flat Rock, Minnesota, where former Army investigator Tony DeLucca returns home expecting a quieter life—only to find himself repeatedly drawn into murder investigations. Along the way you'll meet quirky business owners, a vintage record store, unforgettable small-town characters, and enough classic music references to build a pretty good playlist.
